Autor: Elo Gaver
At the beginning of May 2025, the Estonian Academy of Sciences (EAS) established the Artificial Intelligence and Brain Commission, with the aim of guiding the development of Estonian science and technology in the field of artificial intelligence. The Commission focuses on solving important scientific and applied issues for the state, including the implementation of artificial intelligence, the development of scientific research, and the support of innovation.
A key task of the Commission is to act as a bridge between basic and applied research, providing valuable advice to the government, parliament, and the public on scientific and technological matters. Lauri Antalainen, Lead Consultant at Digiwise, is responsible for AI implementation in industrial enterprises and plays a crucial role in offering strategic advice. The Commission includes 17 members, specialists from various fields.
At the first meeting, the Commission discussed the impact of AI on the economy and society, the need for advanced AI and IT infrastructure, and the importance of reducing Estonia’s dependence on global cloud service providers such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. The discussion also highlighted how national funding for scientific research can support AI development and ensure the preservation of the Estonian language and culture in AI applications.
The Commission aims to define strategic paths for applying AI solutions across sectors like the economy, education, healthcare, and security. They discussed how AI can transform industrial processes, improve education, and enhance public services. Members agreed that AI development in Estonia must address both technological needs and the development of human competencies, with universities playing a key role.
The Estonian Academy of Sciences continues to support science and innovation by shaping policies focused on AI development and its impact in Estonia.
