It is important to understand that by 2026, artificial intelligence has evolved to a stage where relying solely on prompt-based usage leaves much of AI’s real potential untapped. The current standard is increasingly moving towards AI agents, which are characterised by three key capabilities:

• Agency – each AI agent is designed and guided to perform a specific task or set of tasks at a high level.
• Tool usage capability – AI agents can use the same tools as employees, ranging from Excel and Word to ERP systems and other business-critical software solutions.
• Autonomy – AI agents can operate autonomously in the background, for example by completing preparatory work before a human takes over the process.
